Unit 1 Learning is Fun

Specific Learning Outcome	Performance Criteria/ Criteria for Assessment
The learner should be able to:	The learner has achieved this outcome because s/he can:
1.1 Identify the skills learnt by children through play.	Observe children at play and list skills used.
1.2 Link the skills learnt through play to subjects taught in school.	Link the skills learnt through play to science, history and geography, or any other subject, as taught in the primary school.
1.3 Suggest inexpensive/value for money resources for play.	List good play resources.
1.4 Discuss television viewing, computer and video games.	List the child’s favourite programmes. List three good things about television. List three bad things about television. Talk about computer and video games and list learning opportunities.

Unit 2 Literacy Development

Specific Learning Outcome	Performance Criteria/ Criteria for Assessment
The learner should be able to:	The learner has achieved this outcome because s/he can:
2.1 Discuss the importance of talking with children to expand speaking and listening skills.	Record of a conversation with a child where: the child expresses likes and dislikes relating to a range of activities the parent responds with open questions and answers the parent encourages the child to recall a sequence (story, events)
2.2 Identify the sources of print that are available in the home, school and community.	Name different sorts of reading materials found in the home.
2.3 Explain some approaches used to support a child reading.	Explain using any two of the following approaches with a child: reading together key words sounds and blends word patterns scanning the text – to examine its structure and layout skimming the text – to gain the overall gist of what its about search reading – to locate information reflective reading – to develop an opinion.
2.4 List ways of including a child in writing for specific purposes in the home.	List activities with specific purposes that would encourage a child to write in the home such as writing a shopping list.
2.5 Identify some of the methods that help a child to spell.	List methods of helping a child spell and design a game to help a child spell.

Unit 3 Exploring Numbers

Specific Learning Outcome	Performance Criteria/ Criteria for Assessment
The learner should be able to:	The learner has achieved this outcome because s/he can:
3.1 Outline examples of maths being used in everyday situations.	Examine an everyday situation and list the maths used.
3.2 Explain the role of parents/carers in supporting their children’s maths.	Describe ways parents/carers find to support their children’s maths.
3.3 Demonstrate ways of helping children in particular areas of maths.	Explain a way of helping a child with two of the following: early understanding of number place value oral and mental calculation skills regrouping learning multiplication facts fractions percentages measurements data shape and space chance. Produce maths/learning revision materials for a particular child for one of the above.
